This initiative, more than just a policy move, resonates deeply with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evanstonian.net\/in-depth\/2023\/08\/15\/seeking-affinity\/\">students&#8217; personal journeys<\/a>. For instance, student Maria Gomez <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evanstonian.net\/in-depth\/2023\/08\/15\/seeking-affinity\/\">told her school newspaper<\/a> she found a sense of belonging in the GANAS Algebra 2 class for Latinx students. These stories emphasize the value of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evanstonian.net\/in-depth\/2023\/08\/15\/seeking-affinity\/\">&#8220;affinity classes.&#8221;<\/a> They show that offering classes separated by race is about more than teaching\u2014it&#8217;s crucial for cultural and personal ties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly 200 students have joined these classes, seeking more than just separation. The controversy has extended into the media, with conservative commentators accusing the school of undermining racial harmony and promoting divisive ideologies. Some have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/school-district-offers-classes-separated-race-shrink-learning-gap\/\">harshly criticized the program<\/a>, saying it shortchanges Black and Latino students and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/11\/29\/progressive-public-high-school-offers-race-segregated-classes\/\">allows &#8220;toxic ideologies&#8221; to infiltrate school life<\/a>.
